Three out of the fouir steel wheels on my 2002 Elantra GLS have in excess of
..040" lateral run-out as verified on a freshly calibrated Hunter GSP 9700.
I bought the car, used, from a Hyundai dealer with only 15K miles on the OD.
The car is great except that I cannot eliminate the slight steering wheel
shimmy at 70 - 75 MPH.
The Service Manager has arranged for me to meet with the district Hyundai in
December and suggested that he may authorize replacement of the wheels after
driving the car with me. Service would cover them for me up to 12K. They
will even give me a break on the price of the new wheels if I am forced to
actually buy them.
The Service Manager has stated that, from his experience, the majority of
the steel wheels fall well with-in factory specs - which are available at
http://www.hmaservice.com/.
Questions:
Has anyone else had similar problems?
Would I be better off buying "aftermarket" chrome steel or alloy wheels?
Is it possible to get a "good" set of alloys form a salvage yard? The
lateral & radial wheel tolerances are much smaller on the Hyundai alloys.
FYI - My wife's '02 Elantra GLS, which we bought at the same time as mine,
turned out mighty fine with a four wheel alignment and a Road Force
balancing performed on a GSP 9700. For anyone that is not familiar with
this unit please see this link

or to fine company that uses one near you see

Any suggestions are welcome.
Looking for perfect balance.
