I've owned a 2001(1/2) Elantra GT for two years and am very happy with
the car. I have 45,000 miles on it and I'm kind of looking for any
tweaks that I need to do before the bumper-to-bumper warrentee expires.

On page 1-35 in the 2001 Elantra Owners Manual it states:

    FRONT FOG LIGHT SWITCH

To turn on front fog lights, place the switch in the "ON" position. They
will come on when the headlight switch is in the first or second
    position.

Well, mine only come on when the headlight switch is in the second
position (when the headlights are on). I would like to have them work in
the first position too (just when the parking lights are on).

About a year ago I took the car to the dealer and explained this. He
said that in America the laws make it so that the fog lights can only be
"ON" when the headlights are on. I accepted his explaination at first,
but it still bothers me. I see other cars with just fog lights on and
his explaination directly contradicts what the Owner's Manual states.

Can anybody help me? Should I go back to the dealer?

    Thanks.

    Jon,

Whenever I come across a car with lit fog lights without the headlights
turned on it's a set of aftermarket fog lights (because they're wired from a
hot spot or directly to the battery then to a rocker switch).

  3. They only come on when the headlights are on.

But what about what the Owner's Manual states? How does everyone else's
    fog
The dealer was right - it is forbidden by the law to have fog light without
the headlights (Not only in US, also in Europe).
Obviously, there is an error in the manual.

    Cheers,
