The owners manually says (and I'm paraphrasing) that there is no official
break in period for the new car, but they suggest that you don't drive over
88 km per hr for the first 2000 km's. They also suggest you avoid fast,
sudden acceleration, hard stops, and that you drive at varying speeds
during this period.

If there is no official "break in period", why would they suggest the speed
cap? (The other items make intuitive sense, but the speed cap seems a bit
extreme).

Thoughts?

Why is it extreme? Many years ago, it was common to restrict speed for the
first 500 miles to 45 MPH (73k) or so, then 60 for the next 500, etc.
Taking it easy at the start is not a big deal and can help prolong the life
of the engine. OTOH, it won't void the warranty if you travel at normal
highway speeds when you must.
