I saw an add in the paper for an Elantra for $9,888. It comes with air,
AM/FM/CD, power windows and locks, keyless entry, and whatever else they
come with standard. I test drove it at the dealer, and the sales guy
confirmed that price was legit. Its a stick-shift.

Is this a good price? Anybody have any clue about much lower I could get
him if I bargained?

Thanks a bunch.

By the way, do they come standard with anti-lock brakes?

Thanks.

It sounds like a good price to me. Is there a factory rebate on the
Elantra currently? If so, you may be able to get the price down even
further. If not, I doubt you'll be able to do much better, but it can't
hurt to try.

No. ABS is an option, typically combined with Traction Control and a
Sunroof in a rather expensive package (~$1500).

Sounds like a good price, but you won't know the true price until you're further along with the salesman. For one thing there's usually a $500 destination fee, and if you're going to get the car financed be careful about the APR they offer you. You may want to check www.edmunds.com for details about options, charges, rebates, etc. For instance, ABS/TCS (anti lock brakes and traction control) is not standard. It's part of an options package (though you can get it without the sunroof). And oddly enough, the CD player is normally only available with the Sunroof option. I have a 2003 Elantra with a 5 speed manual transmission, AM/FM/Tape (no CD) power doors/windows, keyless entry/alarm, and cruise control. It's a great car and I paid $13,000 "out the door" (including sales tax and license). Good luck!

Thanks guys.

Aside from the destination charge, is that all I should look out for other
than the price of the car? I know there it TT&L, but they can't dick with
that, can they? Isn't that a standard price? Anything else I need to be
aware of that they can say "yea, we agreed to $9,888, but that didn't
include _____________"?

Thanks again.

There are a number of "cash back" offers currently in effect for the Elantra. They may already be rolled into the price you were quoted (which would help to explain why it's so low), but it wouldn't hurt to make sure you're getting all the "incentives" you're eligible for. Again, have a look at www.edmunds.com for a complete list. As far as the dealer messing with you I can only repeat what many have said, i.e. always be prepared to walk out. Good luck!

That's not true with the '04. You can get the sunroof without ABS/TC -
which I did - but you cannot buy ABS/TC without a sunroof.

Elantras (2004 anyway) should be about $13,000 new, base price. For
about $10,000, that's a good deal. ABS comes with Traction
Control--both need to be bought together (and both are part of an option
package, so ABS is not standard)

Thanks for clarifying that. I should have said I was referring to the options packages when I bought the 2003 Elantra. Apparently things have changed.
