I have a 98 Elantra that had a loud rattle on the left side ofthe dashboard.
THis rattle seems to be more apparent when it's cold out of the air
conditioning is on. It sounds as if it could be the spedometer cable, but
I'm unsure. Has anyone else had a noise like this and knows what the cause
is?

Thanks,

-David

This may not be the same type of problem, but a similar noise was coming
from my dashboard of my 96 Elantra. Just figured something was loose behind
the panel. A few weeks ago, the car started jerking when it tried to change
gears (automatic) and seemed confused about whether it needed to downshift
or upshift. So I was convinced that something was wrong with the
transmission (again...don't even talk to me about tranny problems and that
car!). When the mechanic ran a diagnostic, he found that the cable
connected to the spedometer (they call it a Speedo cable) was frayed. This
frayed cable was relaying false readings to the transmission, causing the
jerking to occur. They then took the car out for a test drive and found
that the spedometer needle was jumping when its speed was increased to 60km.
So my suggestion, is to watch for that needle jump, be aware of any jerking
that may happen when you increase or decrease speed without applying the
brakes, or take it in to a dealership to assess the problem!

Cheers,
Lisa
