    hi
    1998 hyundai accent automatic.
this has happened 8 times in the last 2 months and i am starting to not
    trust this car.
it happens both cold or hot but usually after sitting for 1/2 hour after
    short(7-8 miles)drive.
no ses code set(at least the light doesent come on).
engine turns over normally but seems to get no spark.
you can smell gas after cranking for a couple seconds.
sometimes will start if you shift the transmission from park a few times.
i originally thought it might be the gear switch for the tranny but it seems
if that was the culprit that the car would not even turn over(in gear safty
    switch???)
the dealer said unless it died in the bay that they would be unable to
diagnose the prob as there are no codes set.
anyone have any ideas that i can check out.
it has had a recent tuneup(10,000kms ago) with new
    plugs/airfilter/wires/fuel filter etc.
is there anything in the ignition that might cause this.
    thanks in advance
    jeff

Does this Accent have a tachometer?

Next time it just cranks, see if the tacho needle bounces.
How many miles on this car?

    hi again
i know some people were following this thread so here is an update:
this has not happened since so i guess its really no update.
funny that it happenes 8 times in a couple months.
anyway if it happes again i will post whether or not the tach bounces while
    cranking the engine.
    regards,jeff

Same thing happened to my Santa Fe last week. Crank - no start.
Had it towed to the dealer. Next morn at the dealer, she started right
off. Tech said the SF had bad breath and the exhaust smelled like
'spoiled gas'. No codes were set and it hasn't happened since. Go
    figure.

Hyundai's roadside warranty sure works great. =;-)

Ok! It happened again! My 02' SF with a 'crank but no start'
condition. This time I checked for spark and found none. Kept
the SF overnight and the next morn, it still wouldn't start. Called
roadside assistance and off she went to the dealer. I'll let the
group know what I'm told, by the dealer. BTW, my tach didn't
    budge while cranking.

Hyundai's roadside warranty sure works great. Again! =;-)

Dealer just called to have me pick up SF. Said problem was
failed fuel pump. None were in stock - had to wait a coupla days (it
    was replaced under warranty).
Can't wait to get the SF back. Dealer allowed a rental Pontiac
Vibe while the SF was in the shop. Neither my wife nor I cared for the
    Vibe. =:p
