Just been informed by service dept that the alternator on my 98 Sonata
Levant 3lt V6 is dead. They are quoting around the $1,000 (Australian)
to replace as it is so difficult to access.... anyone know if it is a
difficult job or are they seeing me as an easy source of income?

It's definitely a difficult job. I don't know how $Australian compares to
$US, but I'm figuring about $450 US. There's one of two ways:

Pull p/s and other stuff out of the way at the top rear of the engine
compartment and take alternator out the top

or

Remove the axle and motor mount and jack the engine and take the
alternator out the bottom.

Thanks for that... makes their quote sound, if not reasonable, at
least understandable. They got back to me today and revised the quote
to about $AUS700. (exchange rate is about 78c so sound pretty
comparable).

sounds like a rip to me

Looking at the other reply it seems they were being truthful about the
difficult job.
Sounded way too much for a car like this but it looks like Hyundai
saved money by not worrying too much about ease of repair/replacement
when they designed it.
Just have to hope they put everything back in place correctly.

pwr stearing...
neever seen under hood of a 98 sonata but i admire the looks, exspecially at

Just got the car back from the service department......am now $AUS735
lighter.
According to the job card they took the second approach..... removed
axle and engine mount then lifted the engine to remove the alternator.
Nothing seems to be rattling any more (or less) than before so it
looks okay so far.
