I have read in the past a few discussion about an air filter that should
improve performance and gas mileage. a couple of question: is this a
mainstream opinion or a tenet of a few aficionados? I am not an expert,
although I was smart enough to buy a SF 2002 :) , and don't want to mess
around with things I don't know much about.

The second question of course revolves around the name of this thingy
and if it's possible to get it online, or otherwise where.

    Thank you

  2. I think you're talking about the K&N Air Filter, available at auto
parts stores or http://knfilters.com/ among many other places on the
wide Net. Opinions about these filters are generally positive, at least
among the guys I know who like cars. Using a K&N filter may get you an
extra 3-5 HP, but it's very difficult to measure that gain since that's
within the error of your average dyno. The filter is less restrictive
than a stock filter, so you can get more air to your engine more
quickly, which is always a good thing. Don't know about mileage
    improvements. HTH,

K & N type filters MAY allow more air into the engine, but
(there's that word) it won't do any good unless you get a bigger
exhaust system to let the extra air out. There is no free lunch.

Yeah, you want a K&N Air Filter. It should run you $40-50. The
recharge kit is another $10-15 (but you only need that every ~50000
miles, depending on your driving habits and environment).

Don't expect more than 5 HP and more than 1-2 extra MPG (I got about 4
HP according to a G-Tech Pro and about an extra 1.25 MPG). Your car
will also sound slightly meaner after the installation.

check out www.uniflow.com.au. their rampod style filter has done wonders for
my SF 02. it sounds meaner and the consumption is down. torque increase is
noticable at the low end but i think power is down.
