The Pioneers in there are pretty good but i am looking for a little
bit more in the low end without having to drop in some monster woofer
in the trunk. Crutchfield (bless their 95% MSRP hearts) say that the
model TS-A6980R won't fit my car but I'd rather put those Pioneers in
there. Anyone replaced their own? If so, how'd you get the grills off
without damage. Cheers for any help.

I have an 2002 Sonata GLS and went to my local car stereo installer chain
(CarToys) in the Seattle, WA, USA area. I had them put in a pair of Alpine
3-way 6x9 in the rear. The difference is like night and day. A very simple
drop-in as I understand it. Check with a local car audio shop. Also, the
speakers they took out were some cheapo Panasonic OEM 6x9's that had
wheezer-cone type tweeters. They were 2-ohms and the Alpines were 4-ohms.
You'll need to balance the front - rear fader to get the sound where you
want it.

Carl,

Thanks much for your reply. I did figure they were ceap-o cone type
OEMs. I'd been looking at some Sony speakers but I hear they don't
have that good a rep. I was trying to keep my configuration Pioneer so
I wouldn't have to mess around too much with the front door speakers
but if the fronts are 2 ohm that is gonna mess things up a bit if the
replacements for the rear deck are 4 ohm. Basically I'm not looking
for a major rewire, just a plain drop-in like your Alpines. I guess
I'll have to go to the Best Buy and hear what Alpines sound like
compared to the Pioneers I was looking at. Cheers!

The Alpine SPR series have bass almost like miniature subwoofers. I
had a pair of the 6.5" variety put in the front doors of my Elantra and
they have basically staved off my desire to install a sub. Well, okay,
I'd like more bass, but I don't want it to take up any space! I'm more
likely to install another set in the back and have an amp installed
than I am to get a sub.

I forgot to ask, what model Alpines did you put in there? Cheers.

Yes, that's basically what I am trying to accomplish too. I don't want
to lose any space to a sub. I don't listen to techno or anything that
is bass-heavy dance music. he OEMs are just a little too thin and I
know some quality speakers could beef it up a bit. What Alpines did
you put in yours? Cheers for your help.

The SPR-176A, which is a component system with a 6.5" woofer. It looks
like the 6x9 model in the same line is the SPR-694A. Here's a review:

Some pretty good deals on those out there, from $110 to $140 a pair.
