Brake change for Sonata 2003

Discussion in 'Hyundai Sonata' started by Jérôme Lapierre, Feb 13, 2006.

  1. Hi everybody,

I guess this question would be for HyundaiTech. I think my dealership is
try to pull a fast one on me. Here is the story. My car has 61 000 km, i
would say about 90% of the mileage i do is on the highway.

Went to my dealership yesterday and they say i need to replace my rear
brake and maybe change the rotor. My car does'nt have ABS so i know i have
drum brakes in the back. My father was saying there is no rotor for drum
brakes and he found quite strange that the rear brakes would need
    replacement before the front brakes.

I was thinking going to an independent garage get a 2nd opinion but i
would like to get some opinions here first.

    Thanks

I think most 2003 Sonatas have rear disc brakes. At the very least, all
V6's have disc. Peer in through the holes in the wheel. If you see shiny
unpainted metal behind the wheel, you have disc brakes in the rear.

Actually, there is nothing surprising about that. ABS or not is not an
indicator of whether you have drums or disks. It is quite conceivable that
a rear would wear before a front if the caliper is hanging. That's quite
common on disk brakes. Even though the fronts do 70% of the braking, a hung
caliper will wear a rotor prematurely. As well, rear disks are often
smaller than fronts so they can indeed wear sooner.

Go with your instinct and go to a garage for a second opinion. No one on a
newsgroup can tell you if your brakes are worn. Only a visual inspection
    can tell that.

  4. I have a 4 cylinder and my owner's manual is quite clear, rear disc brakes
are only for model equiped with ABS.

  5. Checked it out (I should say somebody checked for me), they are disc brakes,
    doh!
