Check Engine Light Problem

I have a 2003 Elantra VE that has recently developed this problem.

For the first 6 months that I owned the car - no problem. Now, whenever I
get to about a 1/4 of a tank of gas the check engine light comes on. It
comes on while I'm stopped at a red light or moving in traffic. This usually
occurs about 1 week after I last filled up.

When I bring it in to get it reset, they tell me it was my gas cap and to
tighten it till I hear 5 clicking noises.

Anybody else experiencing this and /or have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

My girlfriend's mom has a 96 Elantra. It does the same thing if you
don't crank down on the gas cap. 3-5 clicks is what you should be
doing.

If it goes away when you bring it to the dealer, then yeah, you're probably
not tightening your gas cap properly. Otherwise it could be anything (for me
it was an oxygen sensor needing replacement).

get your dealer to do an evap test and change the canister close valve. the
problem may still happen from time to time when the temp. is frigid out as
things do freeze.

"Five clicking noises" is complete BS. One click is all anything
needs. The whole point of the click is to tell you that it is "tight
enough", so you can stop. Additional clicks DO NOT TIGHTEN THE CAP
ANY FURTHER. Tell them to put down the crack pipe, and fix the
problem.

I have a 2003 SantaFe LX and had the same problem happen to me this morning. I had driven 130 miles since my last fillup and I KNOW FOR SURE that my gas cap was tightened at least 5 clicks. The dealer, of course, blamed a loose gas cap. The more I research this, the more that I believe that Hyundai has a real problem that they think they can handle by pointing to the owner.

A tight cap does not insure it was on correctly. Mine was on tight but
cross threaded. Problem not occurred since I attended "How to successfully
replace Gas Cap" school.
