Do I need a new thermostat?

    This morning was 0 degrees F. When I went into town, I wasn't getting
    much heat from the heater and the temp gauge only went up to the first
    line. Is this a problem?

    Mike;

    Check you fluid level in the overflow tank and the radiator BUT only when
    the engine has had time to cool off overnight.

    No heat from the heater and no temperature gauge movement could be a low
    fluid level.

    Ditto.

    There's not enough information here for us to make a determination on
    whether the cooling system is functioning normally.

    Whether your engine will heat up enough to provide heat will depend on
    temperature, length of trip, and type of driving.

    Even with a stuck open thermostat, the engine should warm up in stop-
    and-go driving, although it'll take a little longer. In this case,
    there's insignificant air coming across the radiator to cool the
    engine, and the fan will not come on to draw more air unless the
    coolant reaches a predetermined temperature.
