Do people from Europe who bought year 2000 version of Elantra experiance
engine probleme?

I live in Croatia. I bought my Elantra at the end of 1999. It's still under
warranty. I experiance random engine shutdowns while in neutral or while
gear shifting from higher to lower gears. Second problem is where engine by
itself starts to accelerate, sometimes all the way to 5000 RPMs.

If someone had the same problems did you have luck in fixing the problem?

Just a quick note to add.........my 2002 Elantra just had the transmission
replaced today. Same symptoms as you guys listed. Also look around
underneath the car for fluid leaks from the axel where it enters the
transmission. They hummed and hawed and replaced axel seals 3 times before
they figured out the transmission was junk. Beware!! Get it fixed before the
warranty expires!! Don't let them screw you over. This is a serious problem
with the elantras.

Our 99 Elantra has a small pool of tranny fluid on top of the tranny that
always seems to be there... is bright red. Right after having the trans
serviced (standard fluid change/etc) it was fine but now does the hunting
for sears/racing for no apparently reason around 2nd gear or the 2nd-to-3rd
shift. Is there a recall on these things?

Drive the vehicle until the ATF temperature is at normal operating temperature
70-100°C (158-212°F).

Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake. Start the
engine and move the shift lever through each gear, then to "Neutral" (do not
check ATF level in the Park position as this may result in an incorrect
reading).

Check the ATF level on the dipstick.

The ATF level can be accurately checked only if the ATF temperature is at
normal operating temperature 70-100°C (158-212°F).

(duplicate of reply to old thread)
I was finally able to check the fluid level per the referenced service
bulletin. It actually shows up as being apx. 2mm above the full hot mark
after running it a bit, parking it on level ground, going from park to
reverse, to drive, to 2, to Low and back to Neutral. (and checking it while
it is running)

The little puddle of fluid is on the top of the transmission farther aft of
the dipstick tube. There appears to be a breather or something (a black cap
over a protrusion from the top of the transmission). that might explain the
excess fluid around that area, however I don't know what it would mean to
have a little fluid on top like that.

Once the transmission warms up it tends not to surge. Now that it is summer
and the ambient temperature is in the 90s it is also a bit better on startup
too, but it still concerns me.

I wonder if replacing those two components, the pulse generator and vehicle
speed sensor, is the "take two aspirin and call me in the morning -- your
bill is $50" for dealers? I have no idea. The tranny's behavior on startup
is EXACTLY like the description given on the linked sheet, although the
slowing down - surging hasn't occurred for quite some time and might have
been due to low fluid at some time or other (had the fluid changed since
then).

Any other possibilities from the behavior described?
Thanks for your inputs!
