On my car, a Elantra from '92 both ground cable screws were not
only loose, but bathed in oil.
I'm talking about the main neg cable from the batery to the
transmission, and the other wire on the screw next
to it. I had poor/slow starts, or erratic starts, or no start
(turn key, nothing happens) I also have had
my key held captive in the ignition and the solenoid shifter lock
stop working at the same time...
After cleaning up everything and tightening, no start probs!
Hope this helps someone...

If you want to make sure that the grounding of your car is optimal,
there are DIY instructions on the Elantra GT Club and Elantra XD web sites.
