Fuel gauge not moving ?

    I have a ix20 auto the fuel gauge which shows bars electronic not a gauge with a needle seems when fuel tank is full all bars light up as fuel is used only 2 bars dissappear right up to the point of a nearly empty tank .
    Is it the sender unit stuck or is the power to gauge on dashboard faulty .
    I have heard a suggestion take the back seat out and give the petrol tank a bash to possibly dislodge the sender !
    Any help greatly appreciated.
