Sorry for the newbie type question, but what is an interference engine?

One in which the pistons hit the open valves if the camshaft stops turning
due to a broken belt, chain, or other cause. Very depressing.

Its an engine who's pistons will physically hit the valves if the valves are
    open.
Normally the valves will be closed when the piston is at the top of the
    cylinder
so this is not a problem. But, break a timing belt and a lot of damage is
    done.

Anyone know if the 3.5L (2002 XG350) is interference?

How about a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant (2.4L SOHC)? Mitsubishi Service
Department tells me it is an "interference engine". I really don't want
to get ripped off a mechanic or dealership.
