Been hearing an (echo, low growl, ticking noise) for a few days.
Could swear it was coming from underneath.
Had the transmission (manual) oil changed and good excuse to look
    underneath.
There is a resonator (sp?) that has a woven metal around it and it's half
    gone.
Mechanic and I both thought that was it. That was yesterday.
Today, got into a parking lot, turned the wheel and loud squeal.
Looked at the belt on the power steering pump, half gone.
Goes to show ya....look at everything.
Anyway.....I cut the belt off, no more echo, or ticking, But is it safe to
    drive the car?
I realize no power steering, but will I hurt anything for a an hour drive
    without that belt?

    Sorry for the length.

It won't hurt the car or the power steering as the pump is no longer
running. You may push some power steering fluid out of the reservoir from
    operating it while not pumping.

The hazard will be that the car will be difficult to steer.
