Nav System

On my '09 Sonata I found that the nav's GPS system shows me in Michigan
all of the time. I'm actually in Central California. I tried
re-setting it, the dealer's 'tech' tried re-setting it, unplugging it,
etc, and even called some tech support which I believe was Garmin's. No
joy. I'm still stuck in MI. Anyway the dealer ordered a new 'unit'
they said.

When they called to say it was in they said your XM radio is in. I
reminded them the problem was the nav/GPS; so I asked it if was all one
unit. I was told the tech knows what he needs to replace. I asked if
this is one unit will it screw up my XM radio account? "Shouldn't" I
was told.

My question is for anyone who is familiar with the nav systems on these
cars, is the nav /GPS and radio all in one unit? Or is the GPS a
separate module, or what? Based upon the lack of real answers I'm
getting from the dealer, I'm tempted to take the car to one of the shops
around town that install the after market radios, GPS systems, etc, for
a look-see but would rather fore-go the expense of that if possible.

Any ideas or help is appreciated. I'm scheduled to take the car in next
Monday to to the dealer. But do I really want them tearing into the
dash to do what they may not have to? I suspect that this dealer's
'tech' may not be real knowledgeable about this issue. Hopefully I'm
wrong, but I can't believe (although not impossible) that the GPS is
defective on a brand new unit.

My son has an Azzy with nav and had a problem with his unit also. It
just locked up. He had to get a new unit, which included the radio,
installed as well. This did not affect his XM account. If you were to
take it to another shop you will probably end up having to pay the shop
for time and end up with the hassle of trying to get reimbursed for a
new unit as it is my understanding that there are limited serviceable
options for that unit.

In other words, it would be my recommendation to let the dealer handle
it under warranty and tell them that you want a loaner until it is fixed.

Read the first page and it seems to be pretty much accurate.

The Nav reprogramming is indeed a recall and has fixed several units fo
which we had previously ordered Nav units. To my knowledge, however, th
units in quesion had a multicolored (appeared mostly pink) band runnin
across some screens and/or had items missing from the display.

It'd be my advice to have them update the software first, if appropriate
and then replace the Nav unit if and only if the location problem isn'
resolved, which I suspect it won't be.

On the last unit I reprogrammed, I noticed it had the car pegged at HM
national headquarters after the reprogram until I moved outside to enabl
picking up satellite signal. I suspect you've lost satellite signal

AFAIK, they are a single unit.

Why would you take the car elsewhere? You have a warranty. The tech at the
dealer has probably taken apart many Hyundai dashboards while the guy at the
independent shop may have never seen your NAV/Radio unit or a Hyundai. What
do you expect him to do aside from take your money?

I don't like going to the dealer for service because of the cost and
upselling most do, but the dealer service department is usually the best
trained for that brand of car.

If the independent guy screw up, you are screwed. If the dealer does, you
have recourse.

Yes, that's where it's pegged at - in MI. I took a closer longer look
at the unit last night and noticed that the indicator letters "GPS" at
the top left of the screen is not bolded as it should be, but gray.
According to the manual that indicates the GPS is not working, however
when I plug my home address in it finds me and displays my location on
the screen just fine. ?? so maybe it is working. it's got me stumped.

Also, I checked the version and I do have the upgrade to V_A3_3. I'm
curious as to what kind of chore it is and how hard it is for the
dealer's tech to replace that unit? do they have to pull the entire
dash out? Is it in pieces or modules?

tks!

I had no intention of having an indy shop do any work other than attempt
to set it. 2nd opinion thing.

Of course I agree the dealer would be first choice for warranted repairs.

That's a fact.

Sorry, I meant to mention in my original post that the replacement was
simple task. The center trim comes off the dash, at which point the na
unit can be removed and replaced

Yes sir. The new unit went in today in less than 40 minutes and working
fine now according to the wife. She said she and 'it' talked all the
way home. Hmm, this could be a real good thing. LOL

While there we had the dealer do the 3k service. Very reasonable I
thought. Oil & filter was $21.00 and the labor was 11.70.

Thanks again my friend.
