Reverse lights staying on

Has anyone had any luck with fixing the problem of Hyunday Accent
reverse lights staying on continually? Short of paying for the $100
diagnostic at several dealerships or dropping the transmission to the
tune of $450 with no guarantee of solving the problem as recommended
when calling Hyundai? It seems strange to me that this problem wouldn't
be covered under the warranty.

 

I'll presume this is a manual trans. If not, then disregard the
diagnostics below.

Unplug the reverse lamp switch (it'll be on top of the trans with two
wires going to it). If the reverse lights go out, then the switch is
probably shorted. (If they stay on, there's some other electrical issue
that will probably require someone with electrical expertise to check.)
To check further, remove the switch and check the bottom for damage. If
it appears it has been struck or flattened by something, it's screwing too
far into the transmission. If that's the case, replace it and be sure to
get a new sealing washer (if applicable). If the switch looks okay,
reinstall it into the electrical connector but not the transmission.
Depressing and releasing the ball on the end of the switch should turn the
lights on/off. If the lights went out when you unplugged the switch but
this doesn't work, then you need a new switch.

As to whether this should be covered under warranty, I don't know the
delivery date or mileage of the vehicle. In the U.S., the reverse lamp
switch is covered for 5 years/60k miles for 1999 and newer vehicles. On
older vehicles, the warranty will have already expired.

 

If it bothers you that much, remove the bulbs. Should cost about
five minutes.

i think i had a similar problem.

when i turned the car OFF and took the key out of ignition the running
lights stayed ON ! this was true for both headlights and rear lights.
note that the spoiler rear brake light was off, probably because it
is LED and runs on a different circuit. this was the clue for me to
check the electricals.

i popped open the hood and heard a chattering noise. opened the relay
box (right side of engine) and wiggled each relay until one made a
very strange rattling noise. i pulled this out and the lights all
turned OFF. i went to the dealer and had the part replaced for $25
CAD. i plugged in the new part and everything was fine.

then, a week later my rear lights went out. i replaced the bulbs and
everything has been fine since
