SP III vs D III Automatic Transmission Fluid

I drive a 2002 Santa Fe 6 cyl. The owner's manual says to use only ATF SP III, but I live on an island in the Caribbean and am able to get only ATF D III. The transmission has developed a leak lately and I need to top off the fluid level every couple of weeks. Am I damaging the transmission by using D III? Is there really a difference?
