Tiburon Performance Problem

    Hi.

Recently on the highway my 2001 Tiburon has started sounding like it
is having to work a fair bit harder than usual at any speed over
100kmh or upon climbing any hill plus at these times (and only at
these times) there is a strong burning rubber smell occuring which
goes away when the engine is no longer being taxed at that level.
Also, when you are crusing at around 120kmh the engine has this
fluctuating "louder softer" resonance (rrrrRRRRRrrrrrRRRRR)- not real
loud or problematic, sounds like regular engine noice but fluctuating.
I used to notice that kind of sound only at 140 and up - kind of a
background sound when crusing at those speeds that you could also feel
slightly under the pedal. Any ideas what is causing the loss in
performance and smell? A friend suggested the timing belt might be an
issue but could it make such a smell? Thanks for any help.

  2. It sounds like resonance. There are a lot of things that could be
causing it (rough engine, exhaust system wear, loose
engine/suspension/heat shield components, to name a few). If you're not
good at troubleshooting, have your mechanic take a look at it.
If your timing belt was creating a smell like that, you'd be on the side
of the road, not on your computer. It is possible that you've got
another belt that's slipping, so it would be a good idea to check them.
While you're under the hood, look around for any hoses that may have
    become disconnected.
