Tiburon Question?

I have to admit, I am typically not a sports car driver...

However, I recently bought my daugher a used 2000 Hyundai Tiburon.
The local dealer checked it out 100%. It is a great little car (now
that I put some Yokohama tires on it), but it has one 'problem'.

At approximately 3100 RPM, both on the way up and on the way down,
either the engine or transmission gets a lot more 'throaty'.

Is this typical of this model? Or of sports cars in general?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

  2. Hmm. Auto tranny or manual? V6 or I4? Were any mods (resonator
removed, CAI installed) done? Does it get louder really suddenly, or is
    it more gradual?

Searched the fora at http://newtiburon.com/ for keyword "noise", didn't
find much that was relevant. This looked like it might relate, but it
was a squeaking noise at ~3000, not engine noise: (all on one line)

(For most of the inhabitants of that site, engine noise isn't
that important; you can always turn the stereo up!) Anyway, my 2003 V6
Tiburon's engine is a fair bit louder at ~4000 RPM than ~3000, but the
volume increase is gradual, not sudden, unless I accelerate rapidly and
the auto transmission decides to downshift.

  3. Please don't top-post. And trim quoted material when following up.
....remembered something I should've remembered last night: A friend of
mine once owned a Taurus SHO that did something similar at a slightly
higher RPM. He said it was the secondary air intake opening up.
Googling on "Tiburon 2000 $WORD" was mostly useless for $WORD="secondary",
"noise", and "intake", and combinations thereof, but:

    http://www.specplace.com/Performance.html ("variable intake timing")
Sure, it's for a Nissan, but the tech used is the same.

If you have Internet Exploder 5.5 or higher, you can check
http://hmaservice.com/webtech/default.asp , which has a fair amount of
information on many Hyundai cars. There may be a tech note about this
in the 2000 Tiburon service manuals. (NOTE: User-Agent faking won't
work on this site; the "web designers" built the "interface" with
    client-side VBScript.) HTH,
