I was told by my Hundai dealer that the Elantra 96 has 2 timing belts.....
    what's the story here ?

    Confused

it uses a timing belt to turn the exhaust camshaft and a chain on the
other end of the camshaft links the 2 camshafts together.
so it has a belt and a chain. be glad your dealer is aware of it as
i'd imagine a lot of service places would only replace the belt and
not even think of the chain.

Would you have to replace the chain portion? I'd assume it would
have a much longer service life then the belt.

NO. You do not replace the chain. Who is the dealer?

i'd reckon that too. but i'm not going to take the risk when my Accent
(which uses the same setup) is due.
Hyundai's use interference motors and i don't want the mega$$ repair
    bill for neglected maintenance.
