Tranny Fluid - How much needed for a simple change?

My son's 2000 Accent finally got out of the body shop yesterday a couple of
days shy of 4 weeks and $3500 in repairs. He tells me yesterday evening the
reason the air bags didn't deploy was because he had removed the fuse. At
least it kept the car from being totaled.

Anyway, the car has 62,000 miles on it and its time to change the fluid in
the automatic transmission. Hyundai relieved me of $42 for a pan gasket and
plastic transmission filter.

Does anyone know how much $5/qt genuine Hyundai automatic transmission fluid
will need to be added after I drop the pan and change the filter?

The parts guy at Hyundai suggested a 15 quart "flush" of the complete
transmission system. If the car had been pulled from the bottom of a lake I
might would have considered it. But a simple 60K mile fluid change - I
don't think so.

And yes, I bought a new fuse. <G>

6.5 litres (6.8US quarts) according to Hyundai Webtec for complete
transmission fluid change.

Ah, but is that how much will be lost by dropping the pan or does that
include the fluid in the torque converter?

It is for a fluid change - I don't think it is the complete capacity.
I cannot find the complete capacity including the torque converter - sorry.

There is no such thing as a simple transmission fluid change. Better
off having it done by the dealer, or perhaps one of those oil change
places. When you drop the pan, and change that fluid, you have only
changed about 30% of the fluid, which is a rather pointless excercise.
I don't think there is a drain plug for the torque converter, which
is where most of the fluid is. And what about the cooler lines?
Better to pay to have it flushed.

On my Sonata Hyundai WebTech says that the pipe to the cooler (in the
radiator) should be disconnected and the engine run for up to a minute or
until the fluid stops coming out (which ever is first) before draining the
'sump'. This should nearly empty the torque converter.

Were I to take it to one of those "oil change places" I'd be lucky not to
have the transmission re-filled with Ford type "F" fluid by some pimply
faced teenager. <G>

What your describing sounds like what my Hyundai dealer is doing.

Anyone know which line is pressure and which one is suction?

So if the air bags deployed, the cost of replacing the air bags would have
made the car 'totalled' ?

And how about your son ?

Yep. That's what the insurance adjuster told me.

He ran into the back of a full size car doing about 15 miles per hour in
stop and go traffic. Son is fine.

While we are talking about the transmission.
I have a 1998 Elantra, manual , 100,000km.

Is a transmission flush required? Recommended?
Should anything be done to the transmission?

Thanks

this car takes 3.5 liters of atf.

Check with the dealer first, that don't sound right to me.

On my 2002 XG350L, I used 5 qts. No need to drop the pan or change the
filer (there is no filter, and there is a drain plug). The easiest car
I owned in 25 years. Cost me $20 and 10 mins of time. Easier then an
oil change. I did it at 20,000 miles (Hyundai recommends 100,000
miles).
