Previously I posted a query here about a transmission whine in the
2000 Sonata GLS we purchased used at a local Hyundai dealer. The car's
transmission had been replaced under warranty shortly after purchase,
and the replacement transmission had a slight whine noticable at
    certain speeds under part throttle.

I had the car checked out at the dealer when taking it in for
scheduled maintenance and they had a technician ride with me to
listen. While driving driving around the tech said "sounds like pinion
whine" which is also what I thought.

My expectation was that the dealer would blow off the problem, since
pinion whine is not a fatal problem in most cars, the noise was not
very loud, and this was after all a 4-year old used car. (So I was
expecting "that's normal" or "sometimes they're like that and you have
to live with it" or words to that effect.) To my surprise, after
checking a few things the dealer called and said they were going to
install another transmission. They ordered one from Hyundai, installed
it, and all appears to be OK.

It is obviously disappointing to buy a car and have not one, but two
transmissions installed within a short period of time! But I certainly
can't fault the warranty, or the service we're being given on what
after all was a used car purchase, in fact I'm pretty amazed at the
level of service. This is our first Hyundai and we will very likely be
repeat buyers (from Hyundai and the dealer) when car purchase time
    comes again.

Why the suprise ? My wife's first Hyundai was a used 92 Elantra with
only 40K miles (This was in 1995) . She thought the transmission
shifted funny , she thought it was OK , they wouldn't let her take it
untill they replaced the transmission and installed a new exhaust
    system .
