When should you get the transmission fluid changed? I took it into the
dealer to get it done ( my car was also shifting hard) and they told me
that it dosnet have to be done until 100k, (I currently have 40K) any
input on this? I figure that at worst if my transmision fails, they will
haveto replace it it becasue its not recconmended maintence. Also they
said the hard shifting has something to do with the calabration? what is
    that?

  5. You know that a lot of the parts in modern cars are computer-controlled.
Most of these {engine, transmission,ABS} computers have their code stored
in what's called flash-ROM; a form of Read-Only Memory that can be
updated if necessary. This update process is known as "flashing".
Updates to the ROMs in car parts are done periodically as engineers and
users discover bugs in the manufacturer's code.

The bugs typically manifest as "2->3 shift is abrupt, clunky in 2003
Sonata"; minor annoyances rather than life-threatening problems.
Automotive software QA is pretty fierce, because if the software in the
ABS/transmission computer fails and someone gets hurt or dies because of
it, people can sue the manufacturer for lots of money. (If your
Microsloth Windows XPensive fails, you have no real legal recourse--read
the EULA carefully; they say the system should not be used for anything
critical and if you do and it fails, it's your fault!)

You may have done something similar to this yourself if you've ever
updated your computer's BIOS or updated the firmware on your CD/DVD-RW.

Actually, they would have reprogrammed your TRANSMISSION control module.
This means Hyundai released an update to address a specific issue.
Similar to a software update for windows or some such.

I'd change my transmission fluid every 30k at a minimum even if they say
otherwise. I'd rather not have a transmission failure and it can't hurt.
Make sure you keep the receipt where they told you it didn't need to be
done. That way, if Hyundai wants to deny warranty coverage because it
wasn't done, then you have their receipt showing it wasn't necessary.
