I am wondering if anyone has had this problem. I have a 1999 Tiburon with
70k miles and when driving the transmission locks in 3rd gear. It happens
intermitenly, no matter if the car is cold or hot. And it does not happen
all the time...in fact most of the time the car shifts perfectly. When the
car would stick in 3rd gear I would pull over, turn my car off, and then on
and it is fine. However, yesterday that procedure did not work. I would
turn it off, then on, and although it would reset back to first gear it
would get stuck back in 3rd again. As a result of this happening yesterday
my "check engine" came on. I started my car this morning and it ran fine.
The transmission shifted smoothly with no signs of the problem.
I checked my fluid and it is a nice red color with plenty of fluid. I just
had the transmission service the old change before last(approx 4,000
    miles.

I have made an appointment with my dealership for friday on this. But I
was wondering if anyone has an idea of what is causing this. Do you think
it would be under warranty? What should I expect when I take it to the
    dealer?

    Thanks in advance.

My guess would be a sensor has gone bad. According to what my Dealer
told me sensors are not covered past the Bumper to Bumper part of the
    warranty.

Keep in mind, the information I have provided is worth what you paid
for it but is accurate to the best of my knowledge.

its a input or out put speed sensor. look to pay labor and parts aslo...
    only covered up to 60K.
the tcm reads the sensor signal to determin witch gear to apply and when
one goes out it cant do this this it hangs in 3rd gear or down shifts
sometimes rather harshly all at once.

Thanks for the info...I brought it in to the dealer, so I will know more
today. Funny thing though, this whole 3rd gear lock thing happened
Tuesday evening. Wednesday the car drove fine, and Thursday not only did
the car drive perfectly, but the check engine light went off? Is it
possible it could have fixed itself? Anyway, I will let you guys know of
    the outcome.

Most likely, it's some electronic problem not covered because the bumper to
bumper has run out. It is possible but unlikely that there's an internal
trans problem which could be covered under the 10/100 powertrain warranty
    if you're the original owner.

Well Guys... I took it to the delaership and the are going to replace the
whole transmission...Under warranty...I hope thats a good and thing and
doesnt give me more problems. The service guy said that there is something
wrong with the transmission and that Hyundai does not want the dealerships
to fix them. It is more cost effective to just replace them. I will keep
    you posted on the outcome.
