Replace stereo in '04 Accent: easy?

Discussion in 'Hyundai Accent' started by Adam Schneider, Apr 28, 2004.

  1. I want to replace the stock cassette player in our 2004 Accent GL with
something that plays CDs, and more importantly, has a front auxiliary
    input for my wife's iPod.

The selection at BestBuy and Circuit City was pitiful, and they want to
charge me $40 for $10 worth (according to buy.com) of plastic parts.
So I'm thinking of buying a stereo on-line and putting it in myself.

Any experiences with this? Is it something I can do without too much
knowledge of cars and electronics? (I should mention that I did
already manage to get the instrument panel off a few inches, just to
see if I could; what concerned me was whether I'd be able to get it far
enough off to remove the factory stereo.)

Thanks in advance for any info,

  2. And by the way, does anyone know how many Watts the factory stereo
    outputs?

you'll have to remove the 3 heater control cables in order to remove
that panel. one is behind the glovebox, the other 2 are on the side of
the heater in the footwell. mine were on the drivers side but I'm not
sure if it's opposite in LHD countries.
you'll also need an adapter for whatever wireless you install to the
    hyundai wiring harness.

I have a webcam in the tropics

  4. At what point do the heater control cables detach? Near the stereo or
    down by your feet?

You'll need to unclip them from the detents and levers on the heater box.
On the lever, there's a little plastic tab to push in to slide the loop
off. If you force the loop off, it'll break the plastic detent and the
cable may not stay on any more.

    Check this out.... http://accent_fan.20megsfree.com/dashlights.html

I created it to highlight how I changed the colors of my instrument
panel. However, step 8-12 pretty much show what everyone is trying to
describe to remove the center console.

Once the console is off the stock radio is held in by 4 screws and it
slides right out. I was able to buy the wire harness from the
install shop at best buy for 12 or 13 bucks. It's worth it so you
don't have to cut your factory wires. I plan on putting the stock
radio back in it when I sell the car.

Another good source is crutchfield.com. They are a little on the high
end but they include all the wireing harness and detailed instructions
    specific to your vehicle.
